The Afador breed is a hybrid dog that originated in Alaska in the year 2000.

Over twenty years later it still remains a rare breed that  is better suited to a cooler climate.

The Afador dog is mixed with an Afgan Hound and a Labrador Retriever

The Afgan Hound is one of the oldest breeds in the world.

The Labrador Retriever is a very intelligent and a good working dog.

It has good traits from both breeds, they are patient affectionate, loyal, dignified, and courageous.

THE AFADOR BREED

Afador dogs are known to be an extremely friendly breed and are great with other pets and older children.

This dog grows to be quite sturdy and can have a stubborn streak.

It is therefore important that your dog and children are around each other from the beginning and while training.

Afadors also make good guard dogs, as they are alert to strangers.

This breed is very energetic, so access to outdoor space is essential where plenty of exercises can be given.

The Afador is also an athletic breed and will love to play fetch in a safe environment off the leash.

Having plenty of land that is Fenced off where you could play with your dog would be helpful.

Please be warned that this dog could easily jump over a 6-foot fence.

TEMPERAMENT

The Afador pup can take the characteristics of either of their parents.

This makes it a challenge to guess their personalities.

From this mix though you can expect a dog who has got lots of love and affection.

These dogs will also be totally loyal to their owners, but Afadors are hard to train.

It is not because they are stupid, far from it, it is because they are highly intelligent.

Because they are so intelligent they are headstrong and think they don’t have to listen to you.

If you’re a novice around dogs and not an experienced dog handler this breed will be hard work to train.

It would be best to take your Afador to a Professional Trainer.

Do this as soon as possible, because as well as good training your dog needs socialising.

Well socialised Afadors do well in multi-pet situations, but may not like too much chaos.

THE AFADOR PUP

Early socialisation for this breed is absolutely essential to get a well-rounded stress free pup.

Pups growing up with cats and other dogs at home are more likely to get along with other domestic pets.

Afador pups are easy to train if you are an experienced dog handler.

Afador pups however can sometimes be stubborn and distracted.

They are very praised motivated by food, so give lots of treats while training.

Whichever pup you choose will be Energetic, adventurous, affectionate and loyal.

ADULT AFADOR

Because this dog is a mixed breed that is relatively new, you may not know what they are like.

This rare dog first came from Alaska where it was decided to mix an Afgan Hound with a Labrador Retriever.

These dogs come from different parts of the world.

Afgan hounds come from Afganistan and Labradors come from Canada.

Afghans are more aloof and reserved where Labradors are very social and excitable.

From this mix, you can expect a dog that has a lot of love and adoration for its owner.

The Afador dog needs a lot of exercise which include mental as well as physical.

You will need to provide a minim of 45 minutes to an hour a day because it is a mixed athletic breed.

AFADOR BREED APPEARANCE

Afadors are medium-sized dogs that have a stocky build.

They typically have a short, black coat with tan or golden highlights.

They can also come in colours of White, Brown, Grey, Red, and Fawn.

SIZE AND PROPORTIONS

Afadors typically weigh about 50-75 pounds and stand about 20-29 inches tall at the shoulder.

They live for approximately 10 to 12 Years.

Every dog is different but there are similarities between the male and the female Afador.

Females in general are smaller than males.

Females are always protecting their pups and the home.

Male Afadors are territorial but are more likely to make friends with a stranger quicker than the female.

The female tends to be more hesitant, but both dogs are equally loving just express it in different ways.

GOOD FAMILY DOG

The Afador makes a good addition to any family home.

However, if you have very small children it is best to have an Afador from a pùppy.

The Afador can be impatient around small children when it has not grown up with them as a pup.

This dog grows up to be quite sturdy and boisterous and could easily knock down a small child.

When the two are raised together children and Afadors can make brilliant playmates and companions.

Make sure your children and your dog are properly trained to be around one another.

Make sure you reward your Afador for good behaviour.

INTELLIGENCE AND TRAINING

Afrador pups can take the characteristics of either of their parents.

This will be a challenge to guess their personality.

From this mix, you can expect a dog who has a lot of love, affection and are loyal to their owners.

Both the Afador parents are easy to train, so with a mix of both, the intelligence soars.

Because of this intelligence, it is better to take your dog to a Professional Trainer.

An Experienced Dog Trainer would be better suited to correctly train the Afador because of its high intelligence level.

The Afador with its high intelligence can obey commands with few repetitions of orders required.

Because of this dog’s high intelligence, Afadors are known for their work in:

Search and Rescue, Tracking, Sledding, Hunting, Police Work, Drug Detection, Retrieving, Herding And Agility.

Consistency and positive reinforcement are key when training this breed.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Generally speaking, Afadors are a healthy breed of dog.

However, later in life, they can be prone to the same conditions that Afghans and Labradors get.

The main serious conditions would be hip and elbow dysplasia, and bloating,

Keep up the regular health check visits to your dogs’ Vets so they can help you with any wellness routines.

If you are worried about your dog, always phone your Veterinary clinic for advice.
